Comedian Ronnie Corbett has opened the CALAT learning centre in New Addington – and snared a new buttonhole in the act.

The centre will provide education and training facilities for local residents.

But the opening was not without controversy.

Croydon Central MP, Andrew Pelling was meant to officiate at the ceremony by cutting the ribbon to the new community-owned and purpose-built facility.

However, just before the ceremony Mr Pelling announced that he would not be cutting the ribbon at the request of Councillor Mike Fisher, the leader of the council. Coun Fisher denied this.

Leaving that aside, Mr Corbett, the guest of honour, heaped praise on the building’s design and said that the centre was a great achievement for New Addington.

After his speech, amid much laughter, the famous local resident pocketed a new button-hole in a large flower that had fallen off the display.

Other speakers included Coun Maria Gatland, cabinet member for children's services and adult learning, and the chief executive of the council John Rouse.

Jointly funded by the Learning and Skills Council and Croydon Council, the CALAT centre offers a wide range of learning, training and community facilities under one roof for residents in New Addington and the surrounding areas.
