Croydon wedding planner says savvy brides get married in the sun

A Croydon resident is hoping to help brides beat the credit crunch by launching a tropical wedding planning company.

Michelle Pierre-Carr set up the company to help couples who want to marry in the Caribbean.

The vivacious 35-year-old got married exactly a year ago to husband Scott in Montego Bay Jamaica.

She said: “I found it really difficult to organise a wedding there from the UK.

“There are a lot of wedding planners around but most of them deal with Europe.

“As far as I know I am the only planner for the Caribbean so we are definitely a niche company.”

She is hoping that her experiences and her intimate knowledge of the best wedding locations will help reduce the stress of other brides planning their special days in the tropics.

Michelle points to research done by market analysis company Mintell which shows that one in six brides get married abroad.

Michelle said: “The cost of an average wedding is £20,000. In the current economic climate Brides are looking for more savvy ways to reduce wedding costs.

“You might think that having your wedding in the Caribbean sounds expensive but abroad you can get so much more for your money.

“You have to think of it as a holiday, you can incorporate your honeymoon into it as well and your guests can enjoy a week or two relaxing in the sun.”

Michelle offers different services depending on what couples are looking for.

Her full service involves organising everything from the flights and accommodation to the all important dress and invitations, catering and locations.

“It is all about making sure that the bride has a stress free time and so she can really enjoy one of the most important days of her life.”

Michelle’s company specialises in weddings in Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Negril.

One of my relatives decided on a caribbean wedding two years ago and they all ended up with food poisioning... food stored in the wrong tempature... always a nightmare - with sterling at rock bottom, jobs and the economy crashing, it might be better to just live together!! or have a belter in lovely Devon!!

With the local curencies now gaining strength through the actions of Caricom and the loss of value of Sterling against US$ how can Michelle Pierre-Carr say “You might think that having your wedding in the Caribbean sounds expensive but abroad you can get so much more for your money?"

Anyone noticed she married in Jamaica a year ago when the pound was respectfully worth double the US$?

The Caribbean is great, but it is a lot more expensive, if all the wedding guests have to fly out there as well. Better to get married here, then fly to the Caribbean for the honeymoon. We had three weddings. We had our honeymoon in Austria just before the first wedding, which was in Croydon Registry Office, with lunch for all the family in a great restaurant, then a year later a barn dance in Godstone for all our friends, then a few months' later a blessing in our home, with drinks, for close family. Nothing like celebrating!

Sounds great Ann, I hope there are many more celebrations to come.
Yes, the Caribbean is great, but I feel people put too much importance on the wedding rather then the marriage.

Thanks, croyman. We had a barn dance in Godstone for my 50th birthday, a surprise party at the Selsdon Park Hotel for my husband for his 50th to which I secretly invited a few musicians and we also sang some folk songs. I invited his friends from all over the country. For my 60th (I hate to admit my age) we had a full afternoon tea (how quaint) at a hotel near Crawley, which included a celebration for my mother's 90th as well. You are right - one has to keep working on the marriage. One of my secrets is: never point out to your partner that he has forgotten to do something, but thank him for what he has done.

You are so right Anne. I agree with Croyman too, the marriage is more important than the wedding. My friend married in the Maldives last June, we all stayed in private villas and I must admit the ceremony was absolutely beautiful. It was a very expensive wedding and I sometimes wonder whether the expense is justified at a time when a couple is starting out and has enough costs to deal with setting up a home, etc.

Setting up a home is incredibly expensive. I my case, we were both divorced, so already had everything. Just needed to sell our two flats and buy a small house. But for newly weds getting married for the first time, it must be a nightmare.
