Croydon Subway goes halal

Due to customer demand, a subway store in Thornton Heath will be completely halal from Monday.

The popular sandwich chain will serve a range of certified halal meats which are prepared in accordance with halal guidelines from Monday 16.

Rachel Shaw, who holds the franchise for the fast food outlet, said: “I am really pleased to have converted the Thornton Heath Subway outlet into halal.

“It now offers customers halal Subs that are fresh, made-to-order and just the way they like them.

"I decided to convert due to popular demand from our customers.

“Subway aims to be at the heart of the community, and we are happy to offer subs that everyone can enjoy.

"It was our objective to ensure the taste of the halal products matches the taste of the Subway stores gold standard meats.”

If somebody decides not to comment, they don't post anything. Otherwise, anybody deciding not to comment would leave a comment like yours on every article they decide not to comment on, get it?

Halal slaughter is barbaric & should be outlawed. This 'nation of animal lovers' should not be going down the road of Islamification. I don't expect everyone to become a vegetarian like me, but atleast with regular slaughter - the animals are stunned first. I purchased something from Subway once, it was poor value for money & I've never returned.

Hang up an animal, slit its throat wait for horrific death. You have a choice. Customers who oppose should not use any Subway store or other outlet selling same or at least complain, e.g. Tesco Purley, fast food chicken takeaway Coulsdon...... The RSPCA opposes slaughter in this way unless animal is stunned first. What happens to the rest of the halal slaughtered animal - you are probably eating it unknowingly?

Methinks that we are in accord. All animal slaughter is barbaric, primitive and a reflection on us as supposedly human(e) beings.

You're a vegetarian then. Although I don't like slaughtering animals, I eat meat and enjoy it. Unfortunately that's life and animals do eat other animals. Lions rip their prey to pieces for example.

Maybe the animals that you know squire, but most animals are indeed vegetarian and the strongest animals are vegetarian.Think about that.If you are able to.

So what would you say to the animals that aren't vegetarian? Would you ban them?

Not at all.I just felt the need to make the point that the statement that "animals eat other animals" is not entirely correct. On the contrary, animals (including human non-vegetarians) that eat other animals whether prey or carrion are on a much lesser scale in all meaning than their vegetarian counter-parts.

I didn't say 'all' animals eat other animals. I'm merely trying to point out that eating meat is a way of survival for some species. We are all on a food chain, but I don't understand your scaling system. How is a cow for example stronger than a lion?

Absilutely - BARBARIC & no where near the RSPCA minimum standard for animals to be slaughtered.

I don't see how stunning an animal by giving it an electric shock that knocks it out is any less barbaric. I don't see how having hundreds and thousands of hens cooped up in a tiny space is less barbaric. I don't see how we transport livestock, tightly cramped in lorries, where the animals are injured because they are basically on top of one another, is any less barbaric. No, we're not a nation of animal lovers and never have been. Individually, we love our pets but don't really do enough to change farming methods. Mostly because people aren't properly informed. How the animal is killed is debatable, how the animal lived its life is something we can change as consumers. If you decide to be a vegetarian, that is your choice and I respect that. But don't make me feel guilty because I chose to eat meat.

Oh, and don't turn this into another race issue because this is a story about halal meat. Inform yourself first before saying it's barbaric because I suspect you don't really know what halal means.

Some of the cows seen in and around Croydon agreed are not very strong. But take the ox,the elephant, the horse etc etc.The lion and other carnivores are only 'strong' when hunting, once they have eaten, they spend lots of time sleeping.Mind you, that can be said for the Croydon breed of cows with the addition of 'around'.But take no offence Croyman, not all of us can be on a higher scale.

Religious slaughter rituals do not usually allow electrical pre-stunning of animals. Do those commentators who state above that halal slaughter should be outlawed, feel the same way about the preparation of kosher meat? Would their suggested prohibitions include imports of meat produced across large swathes of the world, the entire Middle East and the state of Israel?

In my opinion,ALL slaughter of animals for food should be banned EVERYWHERE in the world. That includes, fish, frogs and fowl. And dogs for example which I understand are eaten by Far Eastern peoples.Spaniel and chips anyone?

It is pity that people here are either too biased about or ignorant of 'halal'. Those who feel halal barbaric should know that it feels lesser pain when an artery is cut than breaking a bone and in 'halal' no bone is broken till the animal dies.Only artery and wind pipe are cut. Moreover, no major nerve which could transmit pain to brain is cut. This ensures spinal cord intact and since medulla oblongata which controls vital organs like heart, etc. still has connection with these, the heart keeps beating ensuring proper drainage of blood (harmful for consumption) from its body. Now, since no bone is broken or major nerve cut, so least pain unlike other methods in which the animal suffers both pain due to bone breakage and heart attack due to sudden loss of connection with medulla oblongata.
Animal lovers/vegetarians should read a few scientific books and know that even plants live and feel emotions as well as pain. Aren't they cruel consuming them? This is same as murder of a person who has a few senses less say a deaf and a dumb man. Now, I won't expect them asking the judge to award lesser punishment to the murderer because of this.
They should also know that human body by nature has been made to eat both veg and non-veg and this helps in maintaining ecological balance. Please read about how Sahara desert was formed and what it was before.
Further if these animal lovers are so sympathetic towards life then they should not only stop eating but also BREATHING since each time you INHALE thousands of bacteria(mostly harmless) enter your lungs and GET KILLED THERE!!!!
