A new action plan to support Croydon’s carers has been released.

The three-year strategy, which has been prepared by the multi agency Carers Partnership Group (CPG), includes the views of carers, voluntary sector partners and professionals.

Cabinet member for health and adult social care, Margaret Mead, said: “No one single agency can meet the needs of carers on their own, but by continuing to work together we can achieve much more in order to increase the quality of life of carers, who can live lonely and demanding lives.

“The recent national carers’ strategy highlights that carers’ views often weren’t sought by professionals, even though they knew the person well, and knew when something was wrong.

"We must make sure we avoid making these mistakes in Croydon.”

The CPG has already made headway in developing services for carers, from information, advice and support to breaks.

Whether they are looking after a housebound person, or caring for those affected by drugs/alcohol and substance misuse.

Future plans include providing further support for young carers so that they can enjoy a healthy childhood and also achieve their maximum potential in their education goals.

Emergency support will also be developed to help respond to carers who are faced with a personal crisis, such as having to spend a few days in hospital, or having a sudden work commitment.

Carers’ assessments will also be improved to ensure that more carers are identified and receive help, and that a holistic approach to their needs is taken, so that they can enjoy their lives as fully as possible.
