Scorching tempretures have meant Feltham firecrews responded to eight fires in just 12 hours.

Firefighters were called to six grass fires, a field alight and an allotment blaze yesterday -and crews are not ruling out some as arson attacks.

At noon, crews were called to a grass fire at Sutton lane, Feltham, and just nine minutes later, a fire engine was sent to Lampton Park. At 2.30pm, firefighters were called to undergrowth alight at Chertsey Road, and another grass fire at Hanford Park at 8pm.

At 11.40pm crews were called to an allotment blaze at Hatton Road and a field alight in Dudley Road.

Station manager Luke Rowson said during the summer holidays teenagers often started grass fires deliberately and sent a grave warning to arsonists.

He said: "During the summer months grass becomes very dry and can spread very quickly. These fires damage wildlife and can potentially be fatal.

"Some of these fires could be arson, others could be accidents such as a moped exhausts catching on dry grass. But we are not ruling anything out."

Temperatures are set to reach a sweltering 32C today after a baking 31C yesterday.

The Met Office warned people to take care in the heatwave, which is due to end in thunder at the weekend. NHS Direct got 378 calls yesterday from people affected by the weather.
