Green fingered adults create their own garden

A team of green-fingered adults with learning difficulties have been working on a project set up and run by Croydon Adult Learning and Training (Calat), to create their own courtyard garden.

The group has been hard at work constructing garden furniture, weeding, planting and watering at the Calat centre in South Norwood.

The project is part of the horticulture for beginners course, and a City and Guilds course in horticulture which focuses on gardening and the steps towards getting a job.

Councillor Tim Pollard, deputy leader and cabinet member for children, young people and learners said: “This course has provided an opportunity to adults with learning difficulties to work as a team and learn new skills. The result has been a group of novices creating a garden they can work on and enjoy.”

The garden will be opened by the mayor of Croydon, Councillor Margaret Mead, on Tuesday, July 7 at 2pm.
