Croydon Police headquarter's car park was closed after cops drove in a car stuffed with explosives.
They had collected the items from a house clearing company aftery they stumbled across some old ammunition and a small amount of explosives.
The cops drove back to the station in Park Lane, Croydon, with the explosives in the car.
When officers realised what had happened, they closed the car park and called specialists from the bomb squad.
A police spokesman said: “We can confirm that at approx 10am we were informed that some old ammunition and a small amount of explosives had been discovered at commercial premises in Croydon.
“Officers recovered the items and expo were called as a precaution.
“We subsequently carried out a controlled explosion.
“Croydon police station was not evacuated.”
He added inquiries were continuing.
