Cinema chain promises to meet Crystal Palace silver screen campaigners

A popular campaign to bring a cinema back to Crystal Palace is gathering pace, with the managing director of the country’s biggest independent cinema chain agreeing to meet residents to discuss the idea.

City Screen, owner of a number of cinemas in south London, including the Ritzy in Brixton, Greenwich Picturehouse, and Clapham Picturehouse, was outbid by evangelical church Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC) when the chain tried to buy the former Gala Bingo Hall in Church Road last month.

But according to cinema campaigners, managing director Lyn Goleby is willing to come to a meeting with them on August 12, to discuss the possibility of the chain still setting up in Crystal Palace.

Some residents remain hopeful Bromley Council will turn down an application to change the bingo hall into a church.

They believe the council could look unfavourably on plans to convert a key community building, that currently has multiple community leisure use, to a single purpose use.

But the church has said it is confident of “getting a good hearing” from Bromley, and promise to run a number of activities open to the whole community.

It has said it will submit its planning application for the site imminently.

The next meeting of the campaign group is scheduled for July 29 at the Grape and Grain in Anerley Road at 7.30pm.

The number of these evangelical-pentecos
tal churches in the South London area has grown hugely in recent years. Market forces usually don't lie...but I for one would rather have an independent cinema than YET ANOTHER church, preaching the hateful prosperity gospel.

Bring back cinema to Crystal Palace. Do we really need church No.8 in the triangle. The bingo hall was built as a cinema, has an existing planning use as a cinema D2 and has 2 interested parties who want to reinstate it as cinema. This building is the only entertainment venue in the area and would bring many benefits to CP in terms of regeneration. It must bve retained! The people of Crystal Palace do not want another church. Please, please oppose the imminent change of use planning application from KICC. Local D2 venues for local people!!! Say NO to change of use!!

The CP triangle and surrounding area could really do with the bingo hall becoming a cinema. The area is in need of one, for us many film-lovers, but also to add a bit of a counter-balance (`cultural meat in the sandwich') to the many pubs and eateries nearby. I think there are enough churches in the neighbourhood, and there are other parts of the CP area where more appropriate property could be found for another one.

I am a local resident who is a bit confused about why this has caused such debate. When a new pub opens in the area we hear nothing. We live in a country where young people are taking each other’s lives, drinking themselves into a state and getting into all sorts. So a church- which I would imagine seeks to help people in the community - seems to me like a positive thing, whether it is number 8 or 80 in the area. I have been to the Ritzy Cinema and a number of the Picturehouse cinemas and they are hardly ever packed so please someone tell me what major contribution this cinema would bring to our neighbourhood - that a church with facilities to entertain and encourage the community can't?
