ADHESIVES firm HB Fuller has predicted up to half its workers could hang on to their jobs after the Chesham factory shuts.

The news will soften the blow to 100 workers in the town, who face uncertain futures after the company revealed last week it is selling its Chesham operation, in Moor Road.

Walter Nussbaumer, group manager of the company's European operations, said: "We are closing the factory and we are trying to sell it to another company as a going concern if possible.

"I'm not sure whether all the jobs can be saved, but hopefully a good chunk can.

"It's difficult to say how many, because it depends on who the buyer is.

"These things are always difficult to judge it could be half, it could be more."

HB Fuller, founded in 1887, supplies adhesives for magazines, disposable nappies, cereal boxes, automobiles, refrigerators, windows and many other products. The company operates in 36 countries in the USA, South America, Europe and Asia Pacific. The firm, which said it needs to tighten its belt, had global sales totalled $1.353bn in 2000.

Dr Nussbaumer said: "The adhesives industry is over capacity and we need to make some difficult decisions this is one of them."
