An inquest heard how a High Down prisoner sentenced to 14 years behind bars after shooting a teenager, collapsed in his cell after having a heart attack.

A jury at Woking Coroner's Court found that James Brand, 55, of Bromley, died from natural causes in Epsom Hospital on May 13, 2008 at 4.43pm.

Brand had been in prison since July 2006 after he was seen firing a handgun into the air outside The Chelsfield Pub, Orpington on June 8, 2006. He then shot a 17-year-old in the leg and ran away.

Brand was found guilty of possessing a firearm and wounding with intent to cause GBH at Croydon Crown Court on January 19, 2007.

The court was told how Brand failed to respond to six shocks from a defibrillator and CPR by prison staff and paramedics.

Jurors heard how Brand had been feeling unwell on the day he died but showed no signs he needed medical treatment.

The court heard how Brand was preparing for a visit from his partner and two children at around 3pm when he collapsed on the bed in his cell at High Down prison.

He was discovered by another prisoner who raised the alarm and asked prison officers to call an ambulance.

Before paramedics arrived in Brand's cell at around 3.30pm, staff attempted to resuscitate him.

Brand's partner Lee Delroy told jurors how he was a healthy man but suffered from diabetes, anxiety and depression.

She said: “He's usually always there waiting for us when we visit and he wasn't there. Prison staff told us he'd had a funny turn.”

A post mortem examination carried out on May 15, 2008 at the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford, found that Brand's death was the result of a heart attack.
