He then stole a laptop and bag before fleeing towards Wimbledon town centre.
The attacker is described as a white man, in his early to mid-20s, with dark hair, about 5ft 11in and of medium build.
Detective Constable Ben Edwards, of Wimbledon CID, said: "This unprovoked attack using an extreme level of violence towards an innocent member of the public is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.
“This offender is both dangerous and a menace to society and needs to be identified and brought to justice."
No arrests have been made.
