An electrician who had his 21st birthday party cancelled at the last minute managed to find a new venue in time for the bash.

Joe Ewing, from Sutton, could go ahead with his birthday celebrations when a room became vacant at AFC Wimbledon, after having his booking cancelled at Carshalton Athletic Football Club, four days before it was due.

Mr Ewing’s mother, Anne, said: “It was a great night, Joe thoroughly enjoyed himself and was overwhelmed that his family and friends had made the effort to come to the new venue at such short notice.

“The staff at AFC Wimbledon were excellent and very friendly and professional. Considering the circumstances the party went very well and everyone had a good time.”

Last week, the Sutton Guardian reported how Carshalton Athletic cancelled Mr Ewing’s booking and all other 18th and 21st birthday dos, because of complaints made by the club’s neighbours about the noise.

One of Carshalton Athletic’s neighbours, who did not want to be identified, said: "The police was called two weeks ago and all the floodlights were turned on because they were looking for something. I don’t know what happened there, but it was something big.”

Councillor Paul Scully, who attended the scene after being called by residents, said: “I understand there was a fight after the party. I spoke to the staff who was just finishing up at the time.

Apparently the fight spilled onto the pitch, police were called and requested the floodlights to be turned on in order to clear the ground.”

Paul Dipre, owner of the club, said: “We are very pleased that the Ewing's enjoyed their 21st party, we spent two days making telephone calls on their behalf trying to find a venue, but no venue in Sutton was prepared to run a 21st party. It was great that a suitable venue was found albeit outside the borough.

“We are a local community club who are trying to balance the needs of our customers, the local residents and the licensing office. We can understand their reasons and we can also understand people like the Ewings who were angry because we were not able to provide a venue for their party.

“Like every event venue in the London Borough of Sutton we can not take bookings for parties for under 21s, we have had to turn away three enquiries this week, but our hands are tied.”
