Scooby Dooby-Doo, where are you? On Wimbledon Common on horseback it seems.

Walkers in Wimbledon Common did not have a Scooby-Doo what was happening when the lovable cartoon character appeared on the common on horseback at the weekend.

Scooby-Doo, aka Donna Hill, and a fairy princess, aka Jennifer Hesketh, were just two of the characters taking part in an event to help raise money for charity.

Wimbledon Village Stables staged the annual charity ride over two days on Sunday and Tuesday, with more than 40 people taking part.

Now in its the 34th year, the event has raised more than £500,000 for various charities.

This year, workers at the stables, and its members, raised more than £10,000, for The Royal Marsden Hospital and other local charities.

A stables spokeswoman said: “The Royal Marsden has been our main beneficiary for several years as we admire the work it does in the fight against cancer and we know several people who have been helped by the hospital.”

The spokeswoman added the event had been a real success.

She said: “The day started with a glass of port and there were competitions for fancy dress, best turned out horse and best rider of the day. After the ride we went to a pub for a meal and presentation of the awards. There was also a reward for the highest sponsored rider.”

The ride covered about 10 miles of track and paths on Wimbledon Common and Richmond Park.
