A silver shotgun toting armed robber and his accomplice held up a security van guard in Croydon - but fled with an empty cash box.

The armed attacker pushed the 56-year-old guard to the ground before pulling the weapon out on a stunned member of the public, who had attempted to intervene.

Both men escaped into a waiting black-coloured Audi A4 after the attack, which happened at about 10.30am in Hampton Road on Monday.

The shotgun wielding assailant was described as a slim, light-skinned black man in his early 20s who was approximately 6ft tall.

He had a black and white patterned bandana covering his mouth, wore yellow tinted glasses and was clad in a black hooded jacket, jeans, beanie hat and gloves.

The second man was described as dark skinned and was wearing dark clothing.

Detectives from the Tower Bridge Flying Squad are investigating the incident.
