By Community Correspondent Matthew Tijou SUTTON CELEBRATE SENIOR CITIZENS October saw the celebration of the contribution older residents of Sutton make to the society. On the first of the month was UK Older People’s day. The day was organised by a charity called Full Of Life who seek to ‘tackle outdated stereotypes about ageing’. Alongside Sutton Council, they arranged an event in Sutton library to promote their mission.

300 people attended the free event which displayed the many prospects that Sutton has to offer older people. Alongside the many residents present was the Mayor of Sutton, Margaret Court, as well as other local MPs. The event was well received, with guest speakers from the council talking about opportunities for Sutton’s older residents.

The displays informed visitors about accessing work, volunteering, earning extra money, as well as being more active. Information about activities within the library and also those organised by charity Age Concern was also available. Alongside advice, the chance to socialise and meet new people, there was the option to have a go on the Nintendo Wii.

Full of Life have other projects, which range from bridging the gap between generations so that there is a better understanding between younger and older people, to encouraging exercise with a pensioners’ play park.

Sutton’s older residents should look out for any other events organised by the charity as they continue to try to change the way people view old age. Following the success of this year’s celebration, there is little doubt that the event will be returning next year, if not sooner.
