Council tenants have been warned to use fireworks responsibly on estates in a bid to crack down on antisocial behaviour linked to Bonfire Night and Halloween.

A blitz on selling fireworks to under 18s and unlicenced shops selling fireworks is also taking place in the run-up to November 5.

The joint-action by the council and police is to target a traditional rise in crime and antisocial behaviour at this time of year.

Councillor Mark Bennett, Lambeth Council cabinet member for community safety, said the town hall and its partners were working hard to make sure communities were protected as much as possible from antisocial use of fireworks.

He said: "Some people can find trick or treating extremely intimidating and parents have a responsibility to ensure their children don’t go about it in a way that harasses people.”

Police safer neighbourhood teams are working late shifts during Halloween and Bonfire Night, and youth workers will approach young people to warn them of the dangers of fireworks.

Lambeth Council has organised displays on Streatham Common, Brockwell Park, and Clapham Common starting at 7.30pm on November 5.

Anyone who believes a shop to be selling fireworks to young people can contact Lambeth Trading Standards on 020 7926 6109.

To report incidents of antisocial behaviour contact the Safer Lambeth Partnership Antisocial Behaviour Hotline on 020 7926 4000.
