On Friday 23rd October Lampton School pulled together to raise money for the unfortunate villagers of Pannur, in Karnataka (India), whose village has been left in wreckage due to flooding in the area.

Lampton School organised the last minute charity event after a call for help by Ms Rachel Lawrence a member of the schools Religious Studies department who is taking a sabbatical there. Ms Lawrence originally intended to spend her sabbatical teaching, but when the district was hit by floods she has instead been involved in relief work, trying to save the lives and homes of those struck by disaster.

“I would have expected news reporters to be here, but the pictures that we have taken are the only photos that have recorded what is happening in these villages,” Ms Lawrence reported on her blog. “ I would have expected aid agencies and government help, but as I write the only help that has reached the people here is from ordinary people... It is just the teachers in the school giving away their saris to the women who have lost their clothes in the flood and the children in the school here sharing their few clothes and toys with other children from the villages who have come here to escape the flood. These small acts of kindness are the only help that is being given to the people in the villages.

We now need small gestures like this from the people in England.”

On the fundraising Friday, Lampton students and teachers left their usual uniforms and work gear at home and instead wore red or yellow clothing - the colours of the region - to show the world of their support and efforts to help the community in Pannur. They each paid £2 for the privilege. Other activities such as cake sales were organised to raise as much money as possible.

The smallest donation could make a world of difference to the people who have suffered this disaster. Everyone can make a difference to the lives of those who have suffered.
