Passengers are celebrating victory in a long-running battle for better bus services.

Pollards Hill residents have been calling for the 463 to to go past their homes since 2003.

But it was only this week that Transport for London confirmed the service, which connects Mitcham with Wallington and Coulsdon, would be extended. It will use the new route for the first time this Saturday.

The bus will now run along Tamworth Lane instead of Manor Road to reach Mitcham Eastfields station, then continue on to Pollards Hill.

Mitcham and Morden MP Siobhain McDonagh welcomed the announcement. She said: “When I wrote to everyone in Pollards Hill nearly two years ago to see if there was support for the 463 serving Pollards Hill and Mitcham Eastfields, I got one of the most enthusiastic responses ever.”

Merton Council’s cabinet member for planning and traffic management, Councillor William Brierly, said: “This is great news for Merton and particularly for residents in Pollards Hill.”
