Walkers in the borough are being encouraged to get out on one of Croydon’s many walks.
On January 30 and 31, Transport for London (TfL) is sponsoring the Winter Wanders, a weekend of free walks organised by Walk London.
The walks will take place on London’s Strategic Walk Network. The 350-mile network is one of the initiatives promoted by TfL to help London become one of the most walking-friendly cities in Europe by 2012. Croydon is one of the areas featured in the guide that stretches from Coulsdon south to Ewell.
Participants will be able to see the source of the Hogsmill River at Bourne Hall Park, Ewell, as well as the commercial lavender field at Warren Farm.
Walk leader, Suzanne Swann, said: “The terrain covered within these seven miles is so varied.
“Yes, there is some pavement walking but we also cross fields, climb a few styles, cross a golf course, go through three parks and cross a woodland area.
“History abounds – the first passenger railway line, Nonsuch Palace, Ewell Castle, a firework explosion and much more. So come and join us.”
All walks will be led by either professional Walk London or official City of London guides who will be able to provide information on the areas as the walks progress.

You'll be well impressed with how wild Croydon really is at night as thousands of drunken persons shout, sway, vomit, urinate and fight their way from one bar to another.
The red zone in Baghdad or the Helmand Province Afghanistan seem calmer by compare.
It's a thrilling walk as you watch locals and outsiders in a spirit of togetherness enjoy the town, (and I mean 'enjoy the town') once mentioned in the Domesday Book.
You'll see Croydonians laying on the ground in positions the human frame was never designed for; the ferocity as alpha males scrap over the attentions of flimsy clad women whose capacity for drink is as great, if not greater, than the males of the species. A trip to the Town Hall Gardens may also be rewarding as you see the local flora and fauna bend to the might of those who pass there.
To finish the evening delightfully take a hair raising journey on the night bus to Mayday Hospital, where, if you are unlucky to have been assaulted you can sample the delights of efficient health staff as you undergo triage, examination, treatment and discharge from within the casualty department itself.
Or, if in one piece. you can quietly sit in A&E and watch the unruly drunks demand treatment for injuries caused through drink and which, as they are given, take treatment away from decent, law abiding citizens who just happen to be there with a proper injury.
Whilst in the town centre you'll see Croydon's Police, Streetscene officers and NEO's assist each other to control the seething masses in Croydon's once fanciful streets.
This Croydon Experience will take around four to six hours to fulfill its promise taking the observer to an unforgettable and exciting climax for which counselling may be available from the NHS.
