An astute Crystal Palace supporter is cashing in on the spelling error of the club's name on its replica shirts by putting his own up for sale on auction site E-bay.

The extra-large adult shirt, which normally retails for £39.99 has received 16 bids, the highest of which was £100 as the Guardian went to press.

The replica shirts have the name Chrystal Palace' with an extra h' on the club's crest at the bottom of the shirt, on the quality assurance label in the lower left corner of the shirt.

Many other supporters are also keen to have what is now seen as a collector's item, with both the home and away replica shirts still flying off the club-shop shelves before the friendly against Sampdoria on Saturday, August 7.

Another fan has received a modest £41 bid for a seven-eight-year-old youth shirt which normally sells for £29.99.

Some fans are not convinced it was an error, with one fan from Selhurst posting a message on fans website The Holmesdale Online message board saying that the club had meant to do it for publicity especially as the gaffe was mentioned on ITN.

Other fans are looking forward to having a shirt that could be worth more money in the future as a limited edition. But one Palace supporter fears jeering from rival fans about the spelling error.

Nigel Hughes, manager of the club shop, told the Guardian: "We will happily exchange a shirt and will deal with each one as an individual case. We have enough new ones with the correct spelling now to replace them, but only in adult sizes. The kids' shirts are arriving as we speak."

Palace have contacted Diadora about the blunder and at the time of going to press the club was waiting to hear from the Italian company before deciding what to do.
