A talented Croydon quartet bridged a 57-year gap to win the English men's outdoor fours title at Worthing last week, when Norman and Graham Vigor, Andy Hawes and Dave Clark defeated the Darlington Railway team, 22-14, in the final.

The last Surrey success in the event was back in 1947 with Charles Walder's Redhill rink - but this year Croydon beat Shanklin, Carlisle Stanwix, Spalding Castle, Banbury Borough and two Durham clubs, Clavering and Darlington Railway to lift the title.

Croydon skip Dave Clark, 55, celebrating his second title after Cyphers victory in 1981, said he was gobsmacked', and paid tribute to father-and-son Norman and Graham Vigor at lead and third man, and Andy Hawes at number two.

Croydon had to claw back early deficits in the semi finals and final.

The Railwaymen led the final 4-1 after three ends, and, 11-10, after 13 ends. But the Surrey champions took control, scoring two successive trebles, a single and a double to lead 19-11 after 17 ends, and their opponents threw in the towel at 22-14 with one end to play.
