Old Mid-Whitgiftian 14
Gosport & Fareham 11
With two defeats from their first two Powergen London Two South League fixtures, Midwives boosted spirits with a narrow win against Gosport on Saturday.
For 20 minutes, Midwives pressured the Gosport line but their only return was a 15th minute penalty by Stuart Higgins.
Just before the half-hour, Mids' hooker, Nick Shillabeer, was sin-binned for handling the ball on the ground at a ruck, and the visitors took control of the game and scored eight points before his return.
After five minutes of the second half, a minor infringement at a maul saw Manktelow put the visitors back in the lead. As the game neared the end the Gosport defence began to creak and it gave up two penalties which captain Mark Macaskill converted to ease his side into a 14-11 lead.
