Firstly, it's good to see that Councillor Hugh Malyan is so pleased over the show of confidence from the Mayor of London for the extension of the Tramlink.

I think it would be good for all new and existing users, but and it is a big but what Coun Malyan should do is speak to the head of Tramlink and ascertain if it proposes to run more carriages on the existing routes.

I say this because, as a regular user of the tram, I took the tram last Wednesday from Harrington Road to George Street and the journey has really made me contemplate going back to using my car, therefore clogging up yet more roads.

The tram was two carriages long to accommodate everyone wanting to use the service between Beckenham Junction and West Croydon at 8.45am.

How on earth can Tramlink justify this? To say we were crushed is an understatement, it was packed to capacity before we even reached Addiscombe and people struggled to get on and off.

The way home was just as bad, and when a little girl decided to pull the emergency handle, just outside East Croydon, you can imagine the crush and panic it brought, with all passengers being thrown forward. Thankfully nobody was hurt, just shaken.

So I hope that before this extension gets the go-ahead some serious thought is put into researching how many people presently use the tram, the quality of service and just how many more people Tramlink wishes to pack in.

I'm not sure if anyone else agrees but I for one do not think it is a safe way to travel.
