Photography competition winner, Guganjeet Suri claimed her prize at the Croydon Guardian newsroom last week when she spent the day seeing first-hand how a newspaper is put together.

The 14-year-old Old Palace pupil spent the day shadowing Guardian photographer, Scott Heavey, who showed Guganjeet the ropes and advised her on how best to capture stories in pictures.

Guganjeet won last November's photography competition, which saw pupils from Croydon's Old Palace School display their picture entries at Purley Leisure Centre.

Guganjeet's winning snapshot was of her three-year-old cousin, Ria. The prize was to spend a day at the Croydon Guardian offices on Brighton Road in Purley.

The young South Norwood resident said: "A big thank you to the Croydon Guardian for giving me the opportunity to be in your shoes for the day.

"I had a fantastic day and have really learned how a newspaper works.

"I especially enjoyed going out with photographer Scott Heavey who gave me advice on how to take a good photograph."

Guganjeet, who lives with her family in Grange Road, is currently studying for her GCSEs but hopes to one day further her camerawork experience.

She added: "My experience at the Guardian has made me think about a career in photography. I'm seriously thinking of studying photography after I've left school.

Guardian photographer, Scott Heavey, said: "Guganjeet did very well.

"She came out on a few jobs with me and took a couple of shots to go with news stories that appeared in the following week's edition.

"I'll have to watch my back she'll be after my job next!"
