Croydon sprinter Joscelyn Hopeson returned from the Commonwealth Youth Games in Australia with two gold medals this week despite being one of the youngest competitors.

The 16-year-old Archbishop Tenison School pupil won gold in the 100m and 4 x 100m relay and in the process beat more experienced and, on paper, quicker athletes.

Joscelyn said: "It was a big achievement because it was an under 19s competition and I did not have as much experience as the other runners.

"In the 100m I didn't know I had won, but I knew I was in front and had to check if I was first!"

The young sprinter clocked a time of 12.18 seconds in the final of the 100m, after winning her two previous heats, which makes it even more suprising that she didn't expect to win anything before the games began two weeks ago.

Joscelyn said: "It was an honour just to be selected for the team, I was one of the youngest ones to go and I thought it would be a good experience. But I did not have as much pressure on me as the others girls as I was so young, so that helped."

Fellow England sprinter Bernard Yeboah was the other gold medalist from Croydon as he was part of the men's sprint quartet which won the 4 x 100m relay.

He also won a silver in the men's long jump.
