60 years ago on December 15, 1944, Glenn Miller flew from Twinwood Airfield in Bedford, bound for Paris, never to arrive, and the world lost a music legend.

Glenn Miller was without question the world's most famous Big Band leader, and at the height of his fame in the early '40s, sold six out of every seven records played in USA juke boxes. His was the greatest big band of all time, but with the USA entering the war, and Glenn being such a patriot, he offered his services to the US Army and once enlisted he formed the Army Airforce Orchestra.

He brought to this country in June 1944 his finest hand-picked musicians. With the USA at war and musicians being drafted into the US Army, he was able to choose from the country's best symphonic, swing and jazz musicians to create this orchestra. He was based at Bedford during his UK stay.

They played the leading pop music of their day, to give a morale boost to civilians and allied forces alike.

The Glenn Miller Tribute Concert at Fairfield Concert Hall on Saturday, December 11, at 7.30pm, is a special annual concert, which The Syd Lawrence Orchestra has played for many years. They feel Glenn Miller would be very pleased and proud at the superb choice of his music, together with the skill, respect and affection with which it is being played and presented.

It's a musical tribute not to be missed for Miller fans. Tickets are £16.50, ££15 and £13.50 from the box office on 020 8688 9291.
