With reference to the small item A complex verdict is in' (Croydon Guardian, January 12) I wonder how many of the 83 per cent of people who wanted Fairfield Halls improved are regular concert-goers and are aware that most musicians who play there say that the concert hall has the best acoustics in the country.

Were any of them present on Tuesday, January 11, when the lady clarinet player stood on the platform without a microphone to introducer items and was heard easily by the whole audience? Or on Saturday, January 15, when the magnificent London Mozart Players (LMP) concert could be seen and heard from my usual seat at the very back row of the balcony?

Certainly the foyer area, especially the caf, needs improving but this can be done without destroying the theatre or concert hall and at much less expense.

We do not need a whole new building with flying sheets of glass and yet another piazza of bars and cafes.

By all means let the building be smartened up but please do not destroy the concert hall.

Where would the LMP, a great asset to the town, go during the massive upheaval?
