War veterans in New Addington met defence minister Ivor Caplin when he visited the borough to promote the Heroes Return scheme.

Mr Caplin joined Geraint Davies, Labour candidate for the Croydon Central seat in the May 5 election, at New Addington’s Royal British Legion (RBL) headquarters last Thursday.

He met Bill Lennox, president of New Addington’s RBL, who will be travelling to Walcheren Island, Holland, next month after applying for funding under the scheme.

The 82-year-old is one of 33 people in Croydon to take advantage of the scheme which enables veterans to return to the places where they fought to honour their comrades.

Mr Lennox said: “I’ve been twice already but I’m glad to have this opportunity to mark the liberation of Holland with my old friends.” Heroes Return was set up to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War Two.

The deadline for applications was recently extended to May 31. Call 0845 410 2030.
