Old Mid-Whitgiftian 17
Guildford 15
Midwives leapfrogged Guildford into third place in the table after a deserved victory in a close fought game on Saturday.
The hosts opened the scoring with just a quarter of an hour gone, when James Grice picked up a ball which had squirmed out of the side of a scrum, ran round back of the scrum and dived in to score.
It took Guildford almost 10 minutes to respond: Tom Brown scored a penalty after Mids were caught offside at a maul.
Just before the break, Mids set up a succession of rucks which eventually pulled the Guildford defence to the right of the field.
A long pass to Ikenna Ezegbe standing out in the centre allowed him to stroll in for a score converted by James Orchard.
Ten minutes after the restart, Guildford narrowed the score. A period of broken play ended with their right winger going round the side of a maul and putting lock Mitchell in the clear to score under the posts.
Tom Brown’s conversion made the score 12-10 to the homeside. But the visitors took the lead shortly after.
A break by Brown wasn’t dealt with and he put centre Gus Pearce away for a try.
With Guildford leading by three points, the Midwives needed some inspiration.
James Grice provided it by taking a quick tap penalty to himself after Guildford’s backs were caught offside, and crashed over the try line from 20 metres to get the points.
