Memorable moments from much-loved musicals provide the content for Croydon Stagers’ next production at the Ashcroft Theatre, Fairfield, aptly titled Curtain Up.

The Stagers, pictured here at rehearsals, will present their interpretations of numbers from shows as varied as Oliver, Sweet Charity, Chess, Carousel and Showboat at the venue from April 12-16.

This kind of show is complicated to stage, more so than a single musical since the rights holder for every single number has to be contacted for the required licence. Performers are not allowed to present individual numbers in the actual style of the shows they come from.

For example you can’t dress up in gingham and cowboy outfits to perform the title song from Oklahoma.

Croydon Stagers director, John Harries-Rees, and choreographer Corin Miller have had to devise some unique routines for Curtain Up.

Performances are at 7.30pm with 3pm matinees on Thursday and Saturday. Ticket s from £6. Call 020 8688 9291.
