Croydon Harrier Donna Fraser was the cream of Manchester as she claimed both the women's 200m and 400m AAA crowns at last weekend's Norwich Union World Championship and Commonwealth trials, writes Ziad Chaudry.

It was quite a busy Sunday for the 32-year-old Thornton Heath resident who, in the sweltering heat of Manchester, had four races in one day.

Fraser claimed the first part of the double when she was an emphatic winner of the one-lap event and achieved the qualifying time for next month's world championships in Helsinki.

Fraser commanded the race throughout and never faltered, stretching away towards the finish line to win by a clear margin in 51.28 seconds. Christine Ohuruogu was second in 52.28 with Catherine Murphy third in 52.66.

It was the first time Fraser had won the title since 2000 when she finished just outside the medals at the Sydney Olympics.

Fraser later picked up 200m in similar fashion in 23.36secs beating Ireland's Ciara Sheehy and defending AAA champion Joice Maduaka. She became the first woman for 60 years to win the 200m and 400m AAAs championship double.

Fraser said: "It's taken its toll now but I'm really happy.

"It has been a really great weekend. After last year it's smashing to come back and run like this. Originally I didn't know how many heats there would be so I decided to double and then give it my best shot.
