A new production of Rodger and Hammerstein's time-honoured classic The King and I will launch the autumn season at the New Wimbledon Theatre this September.

The King and I tells the captivating true story of British widow Anna Leonowens, the governess who was brought to the court of Siam as tutor to the king's 67 children.

With lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and music by Richard Rodgers, it is set to one of the most unforgettable scores ever written, including Shall We Dance?, I Whistle a Happy Tune, Hello Young Lovers, Getting to Know You, I Have Dreamed and Something Wonderful.

Kevin Gray will reprise his Broadway role as the King, alongside Elizabeth Renihan as Anna. Kevin's extensive US theatre credits include Phantom in Phantom of the Opera, the Engineer in Miss Saigon and Pontius Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar, while Elizabeth Renihan has worked extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre.

Also starring in this production is Alex Beuselinck, taking the role of Lun Tha one of the tragic young lovers. Alex, 25, has just graduated from the Royal Academy and is thrilled to have secured the part in the musical on his own merits. He is the son of actor Paul Nicholas but has been determined to succeed in his own right and never mentioned his celebrity parentage to the company.

The sheer extravagance of the ornate sets, spectacular costumes, stunning performances and unforgettable songs make The King and I one of the truly great musicals.
