Thank you for your coverage involving our local athletes competing in the World Championships in Helsinki (Croydon Guardian, August 17).
Apart from the gold medal won by Paula Radcliffe I would say that the next best achievement was by young Martyn Rooney who ran his leg in the 400m relay in an outstanding time of 44.8 seconds.
When you consider the failure of some of our top athletes this achievement is like a beacon, and yet as I listened to our national broadcaster the BBC ,in the guise of Brendan Foster and Steve Cram, you would have been hard pushed to find out where Martyn came from.
Imagine if he emanated from Gateshead, Newcastle or Leeds, Foster and Cram would have been tongue-tied explaining this to the viewers but because Martyn came from Croydon, not a peep.
We often hear of bias against the north however, in this instance, the bias was the other way around.
What Foster and Cram have to realise is that if we are to achieve success in the 2012 London Olympics then we must support those achievers from whatever part of the UK they come from.
