Wandsworth Council is asking the leaders of four south London boroughs to back its campaign for extending the Oyster pre-pay scheme to local rail services.

Council leader Edward Lister wants Croydon, Kingston, Merton and Sutton councils to add their backing.

The pre-pay facility is only available on buses and the Tube. People in Wands-worth and other parts of south London who rely heavily on overground rail services are forced to buy tickets.

According to Wands-worth Council, many commuters complain about having to join long queues at ticket machines where they are forced to pay over the odds for their fare.

Coun Lister explained: "We are all concerned with improving the environment in south London. I know from the enormous reaction we have had already just what a boost it would be for rail travellers if they could use pre-pay for their journeys.

"We can take our message to over a million people in south London. This will generate a momentum which not even the train companies can ignore."
