Upper Norwood gun victims named

POLICE have named the young couple who were shot dead during an horrific triple shooting in south-east London.

Jordan Lee Jackson, 20, and Leyla Djemal-Northcott, 21, were killed in their Upper Norwood home on Tuesday morning by two shotgun-wielding masked gunmen.

Two men wearing balaclavas and ski masks burst into the Upper Norwood home at about 6.40am and fired off at least six shots, according to police.

Leyla was shot in the head as she lay in bed, while Jordan was shot in the neck as he walked in the hallway.

The couple, who had been together for five years, started living together just before Christmas last year.

Jordan's twin brother, Kieran, was also shot and is recovering in hospital. Another woman, who witnessed the gun attack but was uninjured, was treated for shock.

Police said they were keeping an open mind as to the motive of the killing, although it is clear that the suspects were intent on murder.

The first suspect is described as a dark-skinned black man, approximately 6 foot, wearing dark clothing.

The second suspect is described as lighter-skinned black male, approximately 5'4'' to 5'5'' wearing dark clothing.

Police are trying to work out how the men got past an entry system into the block of flats and whether they ran away or used a vehicle.

Detective Superintendent Gary Richardson from the Met's Operation Trident was called in to lead the investigation.

"We have got a very distraught girl who saw them," Det Supt Richardson said.

"Police officers are waiting to interview her and the dead man's injured twin."

Menlo Gardens was cordoned off and shocked residents were escorted in and out of the building by officers while an extensive forensics operation took place.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said at the scene: "I just wanted to go inside and see my boys. This area is changing."

Upper Norwood councillor Pat Ryan said: "I'm quite surprised really because this is generally a quiet area. It's well policed, it's a close knit community and people take great pride in the area."

He added: "People will be shocked to start with and I think we've got to reassure them."
