Croydon Resource Centre, open since 1982, is based at St Mary's Church, Wellesley Road, and offers support and guidance to the long-term unemployed.

Many of the people it helps are homeless overcoming drug and alcohol dependencies, substance abuse and mental health problems.

Julie Fraser, 20, was a support worker for three years before taking on the role of manager and is the only full-time member of staff employed at the centre.

She works alongside one part-time worker and 19 volunteers.

Julie said: "We couldn't do what we do without the volunteers.

"All the staff here, including myself, have used the group and overcome one or more of these issues. I don't like to use the word empathise, but we do understand."

The resource centre's staff work closely with Mainliners, a drug and housing project, and with Croydon Churches Floating Shelter, which provides beds during the coldest months of the year.

Julie added: "There are 12 churches that are part of the shelter group and they use a different venue each evening.

"Every night from November 1 to March 31 they provide supper from 7.30pm, showers and breakfast each morning.

"There are 14 beds available and it is full every night and has a constant running waiting list."

An appointment system runs during the day but clients are also able to drop-in if and when they need help or somewhere to go.

They can play chess, visit an IT suite, use the telephone, look for a job or somewhere to live or just stop for a cup of tea and a chat.

There is a debating society, tea room and help and guidance in producing CVs and choosing education courses and art facilities are also on offer.

The centre recently had a kitchen donated but has not yet got enough money to have it fitted.

Part funded by Croydon Council and Croydon Primary Care Trust, staff run a health clinic every Wednesday where the homeless receive care and can access doctors and nurses.

Julie explained: "It can be difficult for some clients to get registered at a surgery, they can be stigmatised and alienated.

"This service funded by the PCT, provides primary health care.

"We also contact surgeries on the client's behalf to help them get a permanent doctor.

"We have between 70 to 75 booked appointments each month and we average more than 30 people dropping in each day. We provide the only free shower service in the borough and provide all necessary toiletries."

Julie said of the group's nomination: "It is great we have been nominated, it is really exciting."
