Shoppers in the Whitgift Centre had the chance to nominate someone for a fabulous award when the Croydon Champions roadshow rolled into town.

Award runner-up in 2004 and now the campaign's official mascot, West Highland terrier Hamish McFee was on hand to help our staff at a Champions stand.

Hamish's owner Barry Crossby has been a staunch supporter of the campaign since his dog narrowly missed out on an award.

They have been visiting the roadshows and helping out at the gala receptions ever since.

Barry feels his dog's presence ensures a lot more visitors come to the stand.

He said: "Hamish does seem to have the ability to attract a crowd.

"We are always happy to help such a worthwhile cause, Hamish loves every minute of it."

The roadshows are held throughout the year and since the launch of the Champions campaign five years ago we have ensured that many of Croydon's unsung heroes have had the recognition they deserve.

Croydon Guardian news editor Danny Brierley felt that the roadshow was a huge success, he said: "Meeting people who feel strongly about their community is always very humbling.

"People know the Croydon Champions awards and they are glad people who don't normally get recognition for the good things that they do are being rewarded.

"The roadshow helped us strengthen our already strong ties with the town and Hamish helped pull in the crowds.

"We will be taking to the streets again later in the year to make sure that this year's Croydon Champions is the best so far."

Nominations received during the roadshow will be featured in the newspaper in the coming weeks, but there is still plenty of time to get yours to us.

If you know someone who deserves recognition for their work in the community or the arts, or if you think your parent or teacher is the best in the borough then we want to hear about them.
