An unemployed man has been charged with the firebomb attacks which left two people dead and a South Norwood shop burnt out.

Robert Torto, 32, of Stockwell Park Road, will appear at Greenwich Magistrates Court today accused of the murder of Khizer Hayat who died after a fire at a Pricecutter shop in Kennington and his colleague Hamidullah Hamidi, who died from his injuries six days later.

Two of Mr Hayat and Mr Hamidi's colleagues sustained minor burns when the shop in Clapham Road was set ablaze.

Mr Torto has also been charged with three counts of arson with intent to endanger life following an attack in Tulse Hill on April 14 which left a customer's legs burnt.

A second attack at an off-licence in Portland Road, South Norwood, occurred on April 20 when a bottle of petrol was set alight and hurled into the shop.

The bottle exploded causing a potentially life threatening fire which the shopkeeper - a Sri Lankan man - then had to run through to make his escape.

He sustained burns to his arms and was taken to a south London hospital.

Police believe the three attacks - all on Asian shopkeepers - were racially motivated.
