Crystal Palace could be fined by the Football Association after crowd trouble marred the end of their relegation decider with Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.

Palace fans ran on to the pitch to celebrate survival after a 2-2 draw that relegated Wednesday, whose own supporters then broke through a line of stewards to confront Eagles fans and players.

Fights broke out between the two sets of fans and players were forced to run to the safety of the tunnel under the protection of police.

Trouble also flared up outside the ground between Wednesday fans and police and the Football Association has confirmed it will be looking into the incident and writing to both clubs.

An FA spokesperson said: "The FA does not condone disorder either outside or inside football stadia and thankfully such problems remain infrequent in the modern game.

"However, any individuals identified as having taken part in any form of disorder should be dealt with appropriately by the authorities and issued with football banning orders as they simply have no place in our game."

Palace defender Clint Hill was punched and kicked as he made his way to the tunnel and condemned the behaviour of the Wednesday supporters.

"Their fans were frustrated but still you shouldn't act like that," he said.

"I was trying to be polite by consoling their players and keeping their heads up but you get the odd idiot don't you.

"I just take it on the chin like I did six of their punches and get on with it."

Palace's top scorer Darren Ambrose added: ""A few of our lads got clumped in the face and volleyed and we were disappointed we coundn't celebrate with the fans at the end.

"They have come up and given everything for us."
