Sutton’s chief of police has sought to reassure concerned residents after the second violent death in Sutton within a week.

Guy Ferguson, Sutton borough commander, spoke out after a man was killed on Tuesday (May 4) just a week after Danny Tyson was killed in Winchcombe Road, Carshalton last week.

Tuesday’s incident took place in Cheam Road, Sutton, and after a 49-year-old man was stabbed to death in a ‘supported housing scheme’.

Detective Chief Superintendent Ferguson said: “We understand that some residents will be concerned that this is the second murder investigation in Sutton in less than ten days; there was a completely unconnected incident at Winchcombe Road, Sutton, on April 26, which resulted in two men being charged with murder.

“The Winchcombe Road incident involved individuals who were known to each other.

"Although the investigation into Cheam Road has only just begun, we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident at this stage.

“We are talking to local residents about what has happened and are in close contact with our public service partners to keep them updated.

“Although we have had two murder investigations in a short period of time, we would like to reassure residents that incidents like these in Sutton are extremely rare.”

The Cheam Road victim’s post-mortem examination is not being held until this afternoon (May 5).

Det Ch Supt Ferguson said: “The man, who had suffered from multiple injuries, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in custody at a South London police station."
