Another five cars and a van have been destroyed by suspected arsonists running riot through Thornton Heath.

Firefighters from Norbury’s green watch spent their second Monday night in a row tackling a string of fires, which left another trail of destruction on several residential roads.

A car in Osborne Road was the first target just before 11pm, followed by further fires in Beulah Road, Quadrant Road, Brigstock Road and Brook Road over the next hour and a quarter.

One resident of Brook Road said he was stopped by police and asked if he had seen kids running around setting fire to things.

Firefighter John Taylor said, who attended the van fire in Quadrant Road, said whoever was starting the fires was “taking the mick”.

He said: “The van was more or less 100 per cent engulfed in flames, which started to catch the fence alight as well and set the car alight next to it and shattered the windows.

“Luckily we got there in time to stop any more damage to that car, but all the other vehicles had a proper job done on them and couldn’t be saved.

“It’s got to be arson, so many in the same area at the same time.”

Six vehicles were set alight in similar circumstances on June 7.

Police and the fire service are looking in to all the incidents, which are within about 600m of one another, to see if they are related.
