A 78-year-old man from Cobham has modelled for a photography exhibition cataloguing the different lives of diabetes sufferers.

Gordon Mills, who has type one diabetes, took part in the A Portrait of Diabetes exhibition, posing on his beloved 1960 Triumph 350 Twin motorcycle.

He said: “I bought my first motorcycle in 1949 but when I was diagnosed with diabetes in 1957 I feared that my motorcycling days would be over. Happily this is not so. The secret that works for me so far is to always test blood glucose levels before riding and aim on the high side. Motorcycling, however, is still a precarious activity at the age of 78, especially in addition to traffic volumes and pot holes. It’s nonetheless, exciting and exhilarating and helps to keep an old man happy.”

The series of photos were taken by James Clarke, who also has diabetes.

The exhibition, supported by charity Diabetes UK, is on display at the VAAD Gallery in Mayfair until Sunday, June 19.
