Sutton's oldest resident has revealed her secrets to long life, as she celebrated her 104th birthday.

Margaret Fribbins told the Sutton Guardian how she loved to dance in her retirement at classes in North Cheam, and told friends she put it down to hard work, and a glass of sherry a week.

Her dancing days are now behind her, but Mrs Fribbins still toasted her birthday on Monday with a glass of champagne and a makeover.

The centenarian was given a brand new dress at her party at Crossways Nursing Home,in Stanley Road, Sutton, while she had her hair done with friends from the home.

Derek Adams, 55, her grandson, who attended the party along with Sutton's mayor, said: "She really is amazing. To be 104 really is a bit of an achievement."

Sarah Stacey business manager at the home said: "Its an honour to have her here. She has a great sense of humour, and we are so proud of her."

The 104-year-old was born in Nottingham in 1906, but has lived for more than 70 years in Sutton.

She used to work as a servant for an American family who lived in Wimbledon, before she moved to live in Church Hill Road, Cheam with her husband and took a job in a fruit shop near where Sainsbury's now stands in London Road.

She made parachutes for service men during the Second World War, and worked as a postwoman. She would also watch out for German planes during bombing raids in the area.

Her party on Monday was a lively affair, with champagne, music, and a personalised cake celebrating her 104 years - but without the accompanying 104 candles.

Mayor of Sutton, councillor Margaret Court, said: β€œIt’s a fantastic achievement for Margaret to reach this age. I was very glad that we could help to make her 104th birthday so special.”

It is widely believed Mrs Fribbins is the borough's oldest resident, but no conclusive records exist. Do you know someone older?
