A computer games champion has battled his way into the Guinness Book of Records after beating the most consecutive opponents in console beat-em-up Street Fighter IV.

Ryan Hart, from Croydon, triumphed over 169 competitors in a row during a four-hour gaming session, smashing the existing record by 61 victories.

His quickest victory took just seven seconds, with the average bout lasting just 12, during the stunning streak at a Gamestation store in Hull.

The keen gamer beat hundreds of other record-breakers to be named in the Guinness World Records 2011 - Gamers Edition due to be released tomorrow.

As if his four-hour challenge was not enough, Mr Hart appears in the book a second time for winning the most Street Fighter IV tournaments.

He joins 85-year-old American John Bates, who scooped the oldest gamer award after completing 2,850 perfect games on Wii Bowling, and nine-year-old Ryota Wada from Tokyo - the youngest person to get a perfect score on Dance Dance Revolution.

Despite his gaming taking up to 10 hours a week, Mr Hart also finds time to break dance and drum and says he finds it easy to balance time gaming with seeing his friends and family.

He won his first tournament in 1997 playing similar beat-em-up King of Fighters 96.

Mr Hart has become an expert on all versions of the Street Fighter franchise, which has sold 29 million copies in all formats since the original was released in 1987.

He lists obscure character Eagle, a British nightclub bouncer from the first Street Fighter game, as his all-time favourite.
