Vandals are suspected of destroying a tree in Sutton High Street.
The tree, believed to be one of those planted during the £3.2m high street development, was discovered early on Tuesday morning.
It was reported by Conservative opposition leader Councillor Graham Whitham.
The tree had to be chopped down and was placed outside Wilkinson's to be taken away.
