A new project to get more women into sport is due to come to Lambeth.

The council has been selected as a partner to deliver the Active Women project, which aims to get 30,000 more teenagers and young adults playing sports such as athletics, badminton, boxing and boxercise, and dance.

Active Women is one of 20 projects being funded by Sport England to boost women’s participation in sport, especially those who care for children or who live in disadvantaged communities.

The project will be delivered in 47 of the most disadvantaged areas in England, offering women aged 16 to 25 years the opportunity to engage in sporting activities.

Nationally, it will see more than 200 events and festivals organised, 1,700 new coaches and volunteers recruited, and 1,260 qualifications gained by those involved.

Sport England has committed to invest £2.2 million of National Lottery funding over a two year period.

Councillor Florence Nosegbe, Lambeth Council’s cabinet member for culture, sport and the 2012 Olympic Games, said: “Helping more people, particularly women, get active and healthy is a real priority so I’m delighted Lambeth is part of the Active Women project.

“It will allow us to develop opportunities for women to try different sports, and break down traditional barriers that may have stopped those women from taking part in physical activity in the past. With the 2012 Olympic Games on the horizon, now is the perfect time to inspire women in Lambeth to get involved in sport.”
