A carbon monoxide leak forced the evacuation of eight flats and resulted in two residents being rushed to hospital this morning.

Firefighters were called to Battersea Rise at 1.55am after the leak set off a carbon monoxide alarm.

Two residents woke when the alarm sounded and immediately called the brigade, which sent four fire engines from Lambeth, Clapham, and Battersea stations.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus evacuated eight flats above shops after discovering high levels of carbon monoxide within the building.

A spokesman for the fire brigade said: “The source of the leak was believed to be a malfunctioning domestic boiler.

“The gas supply to the property was isolated and the flats thoroughly ventilated before the occupants were allowed to return.

“The two residents of the affected flat also showed high readings of carbon monoxide in their bloodstreams and were taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment.”
