The council has already beaten its target to reduce rent arrears for the current financial year.

The authority’s housing income team has to claw back the £1,296,812 owed. It set a target of five per cent - £64,841 - for the year but the latest figures show £65,582 has already been collected.

There are many different ways that people in arrears can start paying the money back.

Those in arrears that are out of work or on low pay can claim housing benefit.

The council has dedicated income teams in each district who help people with advice on managing budgets and multiple debts.

There is also a welfare benefits officer in each income team to give in-depth advice and specialist support to tenants who are in real difficulties.

Councillor Dudley Mead, the council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “Rent is not an option that you can ignore. It is very important, particularly when public services are under such financial strain, that every penny is chased.

“I’m sure taxpayers in Croydon will be comforted to know that we are doing our best to recover these arrears.”
