Croydon Athletic’s attempt to get back to winning ways was thwarted at Gorings Mead when thick fog forced the referee to stop the match in the 65th minute with the Rams 2-0 ahead.

The fog was evident from the start of the match, swirling around the floodlights, but it was still playable.

The opening exchanges were uneventful until a break by the home side, on 10 minutes led to the linesman telling the referee that he could not see clearly enough to make decisions. The game was suspended to see if the fog lifted.

Thankfully after a 20 minute hold up the game continued. Horsham had the first chance after the resumption but a header from a corner went over. In the 25th minute Helge Orome picked up the ball and raced towards the home goal, but his shot went just wide.

Two minutes later Horsham had a sweeping move but their attempt on goal went wide of the target. In the 28th minute a ball forward to Stefan Joseph was controlled by the striker who beat his marker and raced towards goal.

His low shot was well saved by Alan Mansfield in the Hornets’ goal to give the Rams a corner.

From that corner the ball landed in the 6 yard box and after bouncing about Joseph scored with a low shot.

The Rams' confidence grew and they began to dominate the match with another chance falling to Tom Bolarinwa but his shot went just over.

The second half began with the fog still hanging around but this did not deter the Rams as they extended their lead in the 50th minute.

A beautiful 30-yard crossfield pass by Stefan Rasmussen was controlled by Shabazz Baidoo who finished the move perfectly by netting the second goal of the match.

The Rams were now in total control and looked very strong defensively with Tom Hughes and Jon Cartledge looking very solid at the back.

Unfortunately the fog returned and on 69 minutes the game was suspended again. The referee held the game up again for 15 minutes giving it every chance to continue but in the end had no choice but to abandon the game as the fog worsened.

Frustration for the Rams but they can take heart, and confidence, from a fine performance to take them into their next match away to Kingstonian.
