Drivers have been putting their brakes on this month to allow an environmental initiatives team to give their vehicles emissions tests.

The Wandsworth Council-run service found, of 76 vehicles tested, four were found to be in breach of emission regulations - and theirs owners advised to seek repairs from a mechanic.

The testing sessions - part of an ongoing campaign to raise awareness of air pollution and improve air quality in the borough - took place over two days in the Sainsbury's car park in Garratt Lane and the Asda car park in Battersea.

The council’s executive member for environment and culture, Councillor Sarah McDermott, who attended the Asda testing session, said: “The team were extremely busy advising drivers on car maintenance and the very simple steps we can all take to reduce our emissions and save money at the pump.

“Most of the measure are very straight forward - like inflating tyres to the correct pressure - but can shave a sizable sum off you annual fuel bill.

“We’re also promoting the use of car clubs, encouraging more people to ride bikes, installing more electric vehicle charging points throughout the borough and have trained local dry cleaners to control their pollutants.

“Other initiatives include environmentally themed theatre productions in our primary schools and a campaign to encourage parents to switch off their engines when picking up children at the school gate. We also offer a free airTEXT messaging service which warns residents when high pollution levels are forecast.”
